About Red Fez Books

I first stepped on a skateboard aged fifty-one and kind of got addicted. Amazed by the whole creative community that surrounds skateboarding, I began to write, draw and publish stuff about it. I published SkatePal, a recipe book inspired by my short time as a volunteer with SkatePal, back in 2018 which sold well. A pal suggested I start to publish other people's material, so I did.

smorgasBOARD

Written, photographed and Illustrated by Josh Sutton

A cultural and edible journey into skateboarding, smorgasBOARD documents my journey into a fascinating new world which I began six years ago at age fifty one. Inspired by this new creative milieux which opened up to me the moment I first stepped on a board, I travelled to Palestine as a volunteer with SkatePal, as an observer to Taghazout in Morocco and all around the UK in search of the perfect pool. Packed with photos, drawings and over twenty recipes made along the way smorgasBOARD is "wise, helpful, well observed and kindly but intelligently written" (Dr Indigo Willing, co-author of Skateboarding Power and Change).

From around the age of one year, a baby can hold a crayon in their fist. Chances are it may well end up in the baby's mouth at some point, but babies soon naturally learn to make marks on paper. Colouring helps develop concentration and focus, particularly for children, but is also broadly recognised as having beneficial qualities for adult well-being and mindfulness too.

Like the full colour version that precedes it, "101 Uses for a skateboard", this colouring book is designed for children of all ages 1-101. So get out your colours and get creative!

10% of the cover price will be donated to the Ben Raemers Foundation.

No Beer on a Dead Planet - by Jono Coote

ISBN: 978-1-8383421-0-4
£9.99 plus P&P.
120 pages, paperback with cover flaps. Chapter Head illustrations by Lewis Brownlie.

No Beer on a Dead Planet chronicles Jono Coote's travels through the skateparks, hinterlands, industrial wastelands and suburban sprawls of modern day Australia and New Zealand.

Set against a chaotic background of skateboarding's mainstream acceptance, looming Olympic inclusion, climate change, institutional racism, the decline of Western civilisation and religiously observant dogs, it attempts to capture a sense of why skateboarders are traditionally such a nomadic tribe and how that affects our experiences of travel. From the drunken excesses of Brisbane skate-house parties to the spiritual epiphanies offered by Milford Sound, and from Instagram-obsessed skatepark mums in Melbourne to bigoted ex-cops in Newcastle, this is Antipodean life seen through a lens of skateboarding culture at a crucial point of change for both Australasia and for skateboarding's culture itself.

"A first class read that fuses travel writing with the peculiarities of a skateboarder’s perspective on the imponderabilia of everyday exchanges" - Paul O'Connor, author of Skateboarding and Religion.

Coping Mechanism - by Tony Wood

£7.99 plus P&P.
51 pages, paperback.

Coping Mechanism is Tony Wood's second collection of poetry. It marks a shift in focus from his favourite pastime of skateboarding to a broader subject area which includes mental health and wellbeing. This is an honest, open and at times hard-hitting collection of writings from the Skatebard.

"Tony's work is passionate, honest and accessible. The sort of poetry I wish I'd discovered at a much younger age, as it would have inspired my to put pen to paper much earlier. I believe he's on the cusp of inspiring a new generation of young poets." Mat Lloyd - spoken word artist & author
